Breaking: OpenClaw Rockets to GitHub's Top Spot in 60 Days
The open-source AI agent project OpenClaw has overtaken React to become the most-starred repository on GitHub, crossing 250,000 stars by March 2026. The surge came just 60 days after the project hit 100,000 stars in January, with over 2 million unique visitors to its community dashboards in a single week.

"OpenClaw's growth is unprecedented in our platform's history," said a GitHub spokesperson. "It reflects a massive shift in how developers want to deploy AI—locally, persistently, and without cloud dependency."
What Is OpenClaw?
Created by independent developer Peter Steinberger, OpenClaw is a self-hosted, long-running AI assistant that runs entirely on local hardware or private servers. Unlike traditional AI agents that execute a single task per prompt, OpenClaw operates continuously in the background, checking its task list on a periodic 'heartbeat' and acting only when necessary.
"It's like having a tireless virtual employee that never sleeps," Steinberger explained. "It surfaces only what needs a human decision, handling everything else autonomously."
Security Concerns Emerge
OpenClaw's rapid adoption has alarmed security researchers. They warn that self-hosted AI tools can mishandle sensitive data, miss critical authentication checks, or expose users to unpatched server instances and malicious code in community forks.
"Local deployment sounds safer, but it introduces new attack surfaces," said Dr. Lena Chen, a cybersecurity analyst at Stanford's AI Safety Lab. "Without centralized oversight, a single compromised fork could affect thousands of users."
NVIDIA Steps In with Open Collaboration
To address these vulnerabilities, NVIDIA is collaborating with Steinberger and the OpenClaw community. The company is contributing code and guidance to improve model isolation, local data access management, and verification processes for community contributions.
"Our goal is to strengthen the project's security while preserving its independent governance," said an NVIDIA representative. "We're sharing our systems expertise transparently, so the community can build on it."
Background: The Rise of Persistent AI Agents
Traditional AI agents stop after completing a task. OpenClaw represents a new category—persistent autonomous agents that run indefinitely, checking in only when human input is required. This 'always-on' model is attractive for enterprise automation, monitoring, and background workflows.

Steinberger released OpenClaw in late 2025, and its simplicity and lack of cloud dependencies fueled a grassroots developer movement. By January 2026, it had already become a top-10 repository.
What This Means for Organizations
For enterprises, OpenClaw offers a way to deploy AI without sending data to third-party APIs, addressing privacy and compliance concerns. However, the security debate highlights a trade-off: autonomy versus control.
"Organizations must evaluate whether self-hosted agents fit their risk profile," noted Dr. Chen. "NVIDIA's involvement adds a layer of enterprise-grade hardening, but the onus remains on each adopter to secure their deployment."
NVIDIA has also introduced NVIDIA NemoClaw, a reference implementation that packages OpenClaw with the NVIDIA OpenShell secure runtime and Nemotron open models, using hardened defaults for networking and data access. This aims to give enterprises a safer starting point.

NemoClaw installs in a single command: nemo-claw deploy. It includes preconfigured security policies, model isolation, and automated update checks. NVIDIA says the goal is to reduce the risk of misconfiguration without stifling the project's open nature.
"We're not forking or taking over," the NVIDIA representative clarified. "We're providing tools that any user can adopt, modify, or ignore. The community decides how to use them."
Looking Ahead
OpenClaw's star count continues to climb, and the community is actively debating governance models. Steinberger has proposed a formal security audit before version 2.0 and invited penetration testers to examine the codebase.
"This is the moment where open-source AI matures," Steinberger said. "We have to balance freedom with safety, and that conversation is just beginning."
